The province of Huanuco is located in the central-eastern zone of Peru. On the
left river-bank of the Huallaga river. It lays between the sierra and the high
jungle.
Huanuco is a typical city of Andean ravine, decorated by beautiful mountains.
At only 4 kilometers away from the city, there are small vestiges of Inca temples,
considered the oldest of America. The most important one is the "Templo de las
Manos Cruzadas" (temple of the crossed hands).
During the time of the colony, the city was an entrance point to the jungle for
the Franciscans.

Tourist Site Attractions:
City of Maria, located at 120 kilometers from Huanuco, capital of the county Leoncio
Prado. It is surrounded by the mountain range Bella Durmiente ( profile of a
young and beautiful women laying on her back).
The Cave of the Owls, located at 6 kilometers from Tingo Maria. It is a giant
grotto of limestone that shelters an important colonie of owl (birds).
Town of Tomay Kichwa, located at 18 kilometers from Huanuco. A population that
conserves old houses with wide patios and picturesque landscapes. There is the
sunlit house of Micaela Villegas, "La Perricholi", famous lover of the Virrey Amat.
El boquerón del padre Abad, at 96 kilometers from Tingo Maria. It is a narrow
canyon covered by vegetation and beautiful falls.
Archeological site Kotosh-Cotos, also called "Templo de las Manos" Cruzadas, (first
sculpture of America). It is located at 5 kilometers from Huanuco. It is assumed
that the buildings date back from the pre-ceramic or archaic final. (11000 -
6600 b.C.).
Archeological site of Huanuco-Pampa o Pampa de Huanuco, located at 134 kilometers
from Huanuco, in the county of Dos de Mayo. It was an administrative center of
the Inca, where one can see the planification of an Inca city with its houses,
streets and buildings. At the east-side of this citadell it can see the most
refined building known as Inca Huasi, that was seemingly the residence of the
Inca; and nearby is the Inca bath with a long terrace as platt-form with embedded
niches.
Archeological remains of Tantamayo, located at 158 kilometers from Huanuco, county
of Huamalies. It is an archeological site known as "Rascacielo de America", due to
being at an altitude of 3.500 m.a.s.l, and its buildings have up to five floors.
Mountain range of Huayhuash, located on the limit between the provinces of Huanuco
and Ancash. With different alps type or himalaya (like snowy mountains). The most
important and difficult peaks are Yerupaja, Siula (6.536 m.a.s.l.), Sarapo
(6.143 m.a.s.l.) and Randoy (5.883 m.a.s.l.).
