Machu Picchu Ruins
Machu Picchu, located 116 kilómetros from Cuzco, is considered for its majesty,
one of the great wonders created by mankind. Discovered in 1911 by the American
Anthropologist Hiram Bingham, who believed to have found the last Inca refuge.
Its origin and function are still unknown.
Machu Picchu or old summit, embedded in the midst of an exhuberant vegetation
at 2.400 meters of altitude, was declared Patrimony of Humanity by the UNESCO.
The city was presumably built in the 15th., century by the Inca Pachacutec.
This archeological site is divided in two sectors that comprise 20 hectares. The
agricultural sector has terraces on the hillsides. The urban sector has different
buildings and plazas, among which are the Temple of the Sun, Intiwatana or Solar
Observatory, Temple of the Three Windows, Main Temple and Sector Condor.
How to get there:
Access to this Inca citadell is possible by train. There are trains that depart
from the station of San Pedro: the one for tourists departs at 6:00 in the morning
and takes 3 hours to get to the station of Puente Ruinas. The local train departs
at 6:15 and takes 4 hours.
There is another station in Poroy, at 18 kilometers from Cuzco (20 minutes by car),
exclusive for travellers to Machu Picchu.
From the station Puente Ruinas there are buses that go up to the city itself.
