Huaraz - Ancash
At the heart of Callejon de Huaylas is Huaraz, capital of Ancash. The Santa River divides the Andes into two chains that hold spectacular andalusia Callejón de Huaylas: the Cordillera Blanca, so named for its eternal snow peaks, and the Cordillera Negra, which is devoid of them. Almost all of the Cordillera Blanca is part of the Huascaran National Park, created to protect the wildlife, the archaeological heritage and scenic beauty of the region. The city of Huaraz, shows a relatively new face, having been completely rebuilt after the 1970 earthquake devastated. Currently, Huaraz is the center of articulation with other towns in the Callejon de Huaylas, as Recuay, Carhuaz, Yungay and Caraz.
TOURISM
Destination for sports adventure in the mountains. As one of its main attractions Nevado Huascaran, the highest mountain in the country, with a height of 6768 meters at its peak south. His blazon is "very noble and generous city of Huaraz" name given by General Simón Bolívar, and in an act of unselfishness, citizenship surrendered all their possessions, as well as civil and religious institutions were robbed of their property, including doors, gates and windows, to provide funds, equipment, supplies and materials, and equip the Liberation Army.
Following the 1970 earthquake, which hit several cities in the Callejon de Huaylas (Huaraz at 20,000 people died and disappeared around 2000) that caused the solidarity of various countries, was named "Capital of International Friendship."
GETTING THERE
Huaraz is usually reached by road, from Lima along the Pan Americana Norte to the deviation in Pativilca (km. 202). The journey takes approximately 7 hours by road. There are two other routes: Lima-Huaraz-Casma (524 kms, 8 pm. Journey) or Santa-Huallanca-Lima-Huaraz (720 kms., 9 hours of travel), but the road is difficult, however, well rewarded by the most beautiful landscapes to cross the Cordillera Negra and the Cordillera Blanca find.
